The aptly named “Right Hand Man” Syrah

I was introduced to the 2006 Barrel 27 “Right Hand Man” Syrah by the trusty folks at K&L wines, where it sells for $14.99, which honestly is a steal because this wine drinks like a $25-and-up bottle of wine.

Before I get to the tasting notes I also need to mention something on a personal level to really bring home how delish this wine is… I am in love with a man who does not care for wine (GASP- I know, love really is blind.) That’s right, my boyfriend of 3 years has never had more than a sip or two of wine without giving me a face that is not unlike a 3-year-old who has just been force-fed their cough syrup. Well, folks, said boyfriend took a sip of this badboy and said to me, verbatim, “POUR ME A GLASS.” Not only did he finish a glass, he polished off the bottle with me! I could have cried. This is how good Barrel 27 is- it made a convert.

If that little wine miracle isn’t enough to convince you to try this wine, then perhaps the Barrel 27 mission statement below will. I mean, how can you not love these folks?      “We work. We work hard to make good wine. You work. You work hard and need good wine. You might have money, but maybe you’re like us. We make Barrel 27 wines for people like us. If you work, and we mean work hard, and you need to drink good wine, and still make your mortgage payments, car payments, kid payments and pet payments, we’re here for you. Our goal is to make wine that works hard at helping hard working America relax for a minute, take a load off, and remove the nose from the grindstone for a while. We hope you enjoy them.”

Preach on, brothers.

Ok now for the actual tasting notes. On the nose were notes of black raspberry, dried cherry, plum, black pepper, and a little smoke. As far as the palate goes, it was lush, mouth-filling, complex, and well-structured with notes of black currant, pepper, anise, and spice.

Are you convinced yet?
