My name is Carly and I am a wino. I developed a love for good wine at an early age (too early if you ask me- I was a wine snob before it was even legal for me to drink in the United States.) Sadly, I never went through a “two buck chuck will do” phase- between traveling to Europe in high school and college and working in fine restaurants, I was spoiled by exposure to good wine. Herein lies my dilemma: I am a wine snob who is also hilariously poor. I’ve made it my goal to find delicious wines that don’t break the bank and share them with my fellow winos on a budget (without any pretension or douche-baggery so often associated with the wine world.) My favorite place to find wine deals is at K&L Wines in Hollywood- they have the best prices I’ve seen, hands down, and the entire staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I also love checking out tastings at local wine shops such as Elvino in Venice, which give you exposure to new wines without having to fork over money for a whole bottle. Restaurants such as James’ Beach in Venice have 1/2 price of certain wine bottles on Monday night (and they even let you take them home with you!) It’s knowing little things like this that let me live a wine-filled life while still being able to make rent. My favorite wines right now are Rhone blends, meaty South African reds, Monastrell/Mourvedre, Garnacha/Grenache, New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, Champagne (always), and Orin Swift’s The Prisoner if I feel like treating myself. If I could to one place in the world and taste wine, it would be France- Burgundy, Bordeaux, Loire, and Rhone!
